Sharing our findings during the inaugral African Transport Research conference in Cape Town

Prof. Waudo joined other delegates during the conference

The first ever African Transport Research conference (ATR-2024) brought together a wealth of interesting and relevant opportunities to advance transport research and solutions in Africa and for Africa – in a beautiful world-class conference setting in Cape Town, South Africa. Organisers were Centre for Transport Studies of the University of Cape Town, in partnership with the Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF). For VREF the conference was a part of their Mobility and Access in African Cities programme (MAC).

KU-WEE Hub’s Prof. Judith Waudo presented findings of our study on Women and Public Transport in Nairobi, which identified the public transport needs of women and the obstacles they face in accessing and using public transport. It aimed to promote gender-responsive policymaking and influence decision-making towards gender equity in this essential service.

The study found that although more than 80 percent of women in the capital city had witnessed harassment in the form of verbal or other forms of emotional abuse, only a paltry 7 percent reported the incidents. Furthermore, very little or no action is taken against the perpetrators.

The study was a joint effort of UN Women, KU-WEE Hub and Stockholm Environment Institute in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing, Urban Development and Public Works, the National Transport and Road Safety Authority (NTSA), and the Nairobi Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (NaMATA).
