Prior to the 2021, Kenya had never conducted a time use survey at a national level. The survey contributes to SDG Indicator 5.4.1: Proportion of time spent on unpaid care and domestic work by sex, age and location.

Key Findings: Women spend three hours 36 minutes more on unpaid care and domestic work than men. Working Women spend per day three hours 18 minutes more on unpaid care and domestic work than working men. In the arid and semi-arid counties of Mandera, Wajir, Samburu, and Garissa. girls aged 15 years and women spend up to six times more than men in unpaid care work.

The findings of the national level Time Use survey, a study in which KU-WEE Hub was a partner, are being used by national government for the care work policy and other planning processes. There was commitment by government to use data for planning purposes while the research institutions were interested in further interrogation and research on the same especially in relation to care work in Kenya.
